Mon. 58

Monument : Ay KV.23
Period : Dynasty XVIII
Reign(s) : Ay
High Date : 1327
Low Date : 1323
Monument type : Royal Tomb
Localisation or provenance : Valley of the Kings
References : PM I, 2, 550-551; Hawass (2006).

The images are taken from Hawass (2006, 36). These inscriptions are notable for their golden yellow background, a style first seen in the tomb of Thutmose IV and used later in that of Ay’s predecessor Tutankhamun . This golden-yellow has strong solar connotations. Extensive use is also made of a white fill indicating empty space, as in the sign for the mouth D21. Yellow appears to have faded to white in several signs such as D2 , I9 and I10, but this could also have been done deliberately as a contrast to the golden-yellow background.
