The coffin of Peftjauneith, from the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Leiden, is a fine example of Late Period funerary art. The museum considers the hieroglyphic inscription to be the finest in their collection. The owner’s name, typical of the Late Period, can be found in Ranke (PN I, 128.2). The Rijksmuseum suggests Sais as the provenance but this is based only on stylistic criteria. A fragment of a kneeling statue from Heliopolis and a libation table from Cairo may refer to the same Peftjauneith, a physician and steward from the time of Apries (589-570). The hieroglyphs are, indeed, of excellent quality and are beautifully conserved. There is much detail in even the commonest of signs such as the seated man A, where the pleats in the kilt are picked out in black. Also the quail chick G43 shows many details in the feathers, a feature rarely seen in such a common sign.
